How 18th century salt was happening in the British North American Colonies:

There was still local emergency salt made from local sea water.  Salt seeps. and springs were found and used to a limited extent.  There are references of trade for salt chunks from - locals.  But this was usually done by traveling men and at frontier posts - where sketchy records were kept.

Rich people -  who kept diaries and accounts imported salt from Spain, France and Liverpool, as well as salt from the Caribbean.

A site of salt making excitement - St. Maarten:

There it is - way out on the northeast corner of the chain.
It is very plausible that this is the first place
the Taino and the Spanish saw each other

The salt pans on St. Maarten

The salt works at Onandaga
These are 19th century works - but it has been a
salt source since before colonists showed up
